In the 1990s, because I achieved good grades, my parents rewarded me with a long-awaited doll, costing 350 yuan (50 dollars). Western dolls with exquisite craftsmanship and blue eyes were rare resources in China in the 1990s. I cherished her dearly and made many clothes for her, preserving many beautiful memories for me.
Many years later, when I had my own daughter, my mother brought this doll from China to the United States. When my daughter was one or two years old, she drew many marks on the doll's body. To conceal these unsightly patterns, I used traditional fabric collage to create a one-piece outfit that could wrap around the doll. Additionally, during the pandemic, I made a mask for her, seemingly encapsulating her like a memory capsule.
